How Many Hours Should You Study Per Credit Hour?

The Carnegie Rule — the standard used by US colleges — recommends 2 to 3 hours of study per credit hour per week. A 3-credit course therefore requires 6 to 9 hours of study weekly. This is a proven starting point, but difficulty and target grade adjust the actual requirement significantly.

A student targeting an A in an advanced STEM course needs substantially more study time than a student targeting a passing grade in a 1-credit elective. This calculator adjusts the base estimate by difficulty multiplier and target grade modifier to give a personalized recommendation.

Common Mistakes Students Make When Planning Study Time

  • Planning total hours without breaking into daily sessions. "I'll study 40 hours for this exam" is vague. "I'll study 2.9 hours per day for 14 days" is actionable and measurable.
  • Underestimating difficulty. Students often treat hard courses like easy ones until it's too late. Use the difficulty multiplier honestly — a physics or organic chemistry course genuinely needs 2–2.5× more time than a general elective.
  • Not accounting for all subjects simultaneously. If you have 5 courses, you need to run this calculation for all 5 and ensure the daily total is feasible (ideally under 8–9 hours including class time).
  • Ignoring the spacing effect. 10 hours spread over 10 days retains far more than 10 hours in one sitting. Plan distributed sessions, not marathon cramming sessions.

  • Use the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes focused study, 5-minute break. After 4 cycles, take a 20–30 minute break. Proven to maintain concentration.
  • Prioritize active recall over re-reading: Testing yourself with practice problems or flashcards is 2–3× more effective than re-reading notes for the same time investment.
  • Study your hardest subject when your energy is highest — typically mid-morning for most students.
  • Set a specific end time for each session. Open-ended study sessions tend to be less focused. A defined end time creates urgency.
