What Is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is used primarily in Indian universities on a 10-point scale under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). It represents your weighted average grade points earned in a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative SGPA across all semesters.

SGPA Formula

SGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)
SGPA to Percentage: Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10

Frequently Asked Questions

SGPA = Sum(Grade Points × Credits) / Sum(Credits). It uses a 10-point scale defined by UGC CBCS guidelines.
Use the formula: Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10. For example, SGPA 8.2 = (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%. Note: some universities use different conversion formulas.
An SGPA of 8.0+ (A grade) is excellent. 7.0–7.9 is good. Below 5.0 may result in academic probation at many Indian universities.
SGPA is your GPA for one semester. CGPA is the cumulative SGPA across all semesters — computed the same way but using all subjects.
