College GPA Explained

College GPA operates on the same 4.0 scale as high school but typically has no weighted bonus for harder courses — instead, advanced courses are weighed through credit hours. A 4-credit organic chemistry course that earns an A contributes more quality points than a 1-credit PE elective earning an A.

Most colleges calculate two GPAs: your Semester GPA (just this term's courses) and your Cumulative GPA (all courses ever taken). This calculator computes your semester GPA. For cumulative, use the CGPA Calculator.

GPA Formula (College)

Semester GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

Common Credit Values

  • 3 credits — standard lecture course
  • 4 credits — lab-integrated lecture (e.g. science)
  • 1–2 credits — lab, seminar, PE, or skills course
  • 6 credits — intensive summer or combined courses

Example Semester Calculation

📚 Typical College Semester

English Comp (3 cr) — B+3.3 × 3 = 9.9
Biology + Lab (4 cr) — A−3.7 × 4 = 14.8
Statistics (3 cr) — B3.0 × 3 = 9.0
Econ 101 (3 cr) — A4.0 × 3 = 12.0
PE (1 cr) — A+4.0 × 1 = 4.0
Semester GPA49.7 ÷ 14 = 3.55

Frequently Asked Questions

Most graduate programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA (B average). Top-tier programs (law, medicine, PhD) typically expect 3.5–3.8+.
Yes, but less than later years. Many law and medical schools look at your overall CGPA, but also consider the trend — a 3.8 junior/senior GPA after a 2.8 freshman year signals growth.
Semester GPA covers only the current term. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers every course you've ever taken and is weighted by credits. Use the CGPA Calculator for cumulative.
Most institutions require a 3.5 or higher semester GPA with a full course load (12+ credits) to qualify for Dean's List. Requirements vary by school.
