The standard US letter grade scale divides academic performance into 13 tiers from A+ (97–100%) down to F (below 60%). Most four-year colleges and universities use this scale for computing GPA, with A and A+ both mapping to 4.0 grade points.
The scale was designed so each letter covers a meaningful performance band: A grades (90–100%) indicate excellent mastery, B grades (80–89%) show good performance, C grades (70–79%) reflect average work, and D grades (60–69%) are below average but still passing at most institutions. An F (below 60%) typically means the course must be retaken.
A common source of confusion is the A+ grade: while it represents the highest achievement (97–100%), most universities cap the GPA contribution at 4.0, the same as a regular A. Some institutions do award 4.3 for A+, so check your school's specific policy.
