CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall GPA calculated across all semesters of your academic career, not just one term. It is the primary metric used by graduate schools, employers, and scholarship committees to evaluate long-term academic performance.
Unlike your semester GPA (SGPA), which resets each term, CGPA accumulates over your entire degree. A strong CGPA signals consistent performance — it can't be significantly inflated by one good semester, and one bad semester (especially early on) becomes diluted over time as you earn more credits.
To see your semester GPA before adding it here, use our SGPA Calculator to compute each term's GPA first, then enter those values here for your CGPA.
Unlike a simple average of individual semester GPAs, CGPA is computed by weighting each semester by its credit hours — so a semester with 18 credits influences your CGPA more than one with 12 credits.
Note: Simply averaging (3.60+3.20+3.80)/3 = 3.533 gives a different (slightly incorrect) answer because Semester 1 had fewer credits.
For CGPA to percentage conversion (commonly used in India and other systems), multiply your CGPA by 9.5. A 7.5 CGPA = 71.25%. Use our GPA to Percentage Calculator for all conversion methods.
Early semesters have a disproportionate impact on CGPA because they represent a large share of total credits earned. A 2.5 GPA in semester 1 (15 credits) requires several semesters of 3.5+ GPA to recover to a 3.0 overall. Use this calculator to run scenarios: enter current semesters, then add hypothetical future semesters to see how different performance levels would shift your CGPA over time.
