How High School GPA Works

High school GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) or up to a 5.0 scale (weighted). The unweighted GPA treats every course equally regardless of difficulty. The weighted GPA adds a bonus for honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) courses, rewarding students who take rigorous coursework.

Most college admissions offices look at both GPAs. A weighted GPA above 4.0 signals that you challenged yourself with advanced courses, which is viewed favorably.

Weighted GPA Bonus Scale

Regular course: standard 4.0 scale
Honors course: add 0.5 to grade points (A = 4.5, B = 3.5, etc.)
AP / IB course: add 1.0 to grade points (A = 5.0, B = 4.0, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds bonus points (0.5 for honors, 1.0 for AP/IB) to reward harder coursework.
Yes — if you take AP or honors courses and perform well, your weighted GPA can exceed 4.0, sometimes reaching 4.5–5.0.
Top universities typically look for a 3.8+ unweighted GPA. Selective schools consider weighted GPA and course rigor — a 4.2 weighted GPA in AP classes often outweighs a 4.0 in regular courses.
Most high school courses are 1 credit per year-long course, 0.5 per semester course. Check your transcript or school's credit system.
