What Is the Exam Score Calculator?

The Exam Score Calculator converts your raw exam performance into a percentage and letter grade. It supports two modes: By Questions (number correct out of total, with optional wrong-answer penalty) and By Points (raw score out of total possible points). Use the penalty mode for standardized tests like the SAT or tests with negative marking.

Formulas

Without penalty: Score % = (Correct ÷ Total) × 100
With penalty: Score % = ((Correct − Wrong × Penalty) ÷ Total) × 100
e.g. 0.25 penalty: −1 for every 4 wrong answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Negative marking deducts a fraction of a mark for each wrong answer to discourage guessing. A penalty of 0.25 means 4 wrong = −1 mark.
Use the 'By Points' mode and enter total points earned (including partial credit) divided by the total possible.
Most exams require 60% (D−) or 70% (C) to pass. Check your course syllabus for the specific passing threshold.
